Banyan trees are one of the easiest plants to bonsai, as they are resilient and easy to shape. A banyan can survive in a small pot for 100 years or more.
Known as the pot belly fig, it's actually a form of ficus macrocarpa retusa, also commonly called the banyan fig. It's a hardy plant that will grow just about anywhere.
Sydney-based Japanese bonsai master Megumi Bennett currently grows more than 300 bonsai pots, which she lovingly refers to as her "children". Roughly half of them are Australian fig trees.
