Thousands of spectators lined the beach as surfers, bodyboarders, and other brave athletes went head first into 20-foot waves at California's "The Wedge" wave break today.
That community is Newport Beach; their lifeguard agency posted on X late Friday night that ten swimmers were rescued from a “monster” rip current on the 4th of July in one incident.
A new wave pool called Snug Harbor using Wavegarden technology is being proposed for Newport Beach, a 5-acre pool expected to open by spring 2028 if approved.
The surf advisory is in place from 1 a.m. Friday to 4 p.m. Saturday. "Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion are possible," an NWS statement read.
