Native arts and crafts are widely collected today, and there are contemporary practitioners who have developed their own recognizable styles.

So I put together an exhibit of those artists. More recently, you’ve also been doing paintings that are modeled after Klimt, Picasso, Basquiat, Banksy, but with Native American subjects — I have.

And though Scholder helped to reimagine the Native American in art at the height of the American Indian Movement, he also rejected interpretations of his work as protest paintings.

In the contemporary work being produced at the Institute of American Indian Arts, where Cannon made his mark, his influence can still be seen nearly 40 years after his death.
