As it embarks upon its journey into its 50th year, having opened its doors as a museum in 1975, it is fair to say that too many faces have been lit up at the prospect of a visit than can be counted.

The competitions, run by LNER and the National Railway Museum, offer "money-can't-buy" prizes. Children up to age 11 are invited to design future railway uniforms for existing and potential new roles.

Station Hall, at York's National Railway Museum, will reopen in September following refurbishment. Events and special features are planned this year for the museum's fiftieth birthday.
