According to NASA, the Earth, moon and sun line up to produce a solar or lunar eclipse anywhere from four to seven times a year. The last total lunar eclipse was in 2022 and a partial lunar eclipse was visible in the Americas, Africa and Europe last September.

During a partial lunar eclipse, Earth’s shadow appears to take a bite of the moon. The full moon is covered during a total eclipse and blushes coppery red because of stray bits of sunlight filtering through Earth’s atmosphere.

This total lunar eclipse — the first in three years — will feature a "blood worm moon," so named for the reddish hue of its glow and the time of year it's occurring.
