Crests hold more historical significance than you might think. In medieval countries with a monarchy, the king would bestow a family crest or coat of arms on higher-class families and his knights.

Abraham Menahem debuted his coat of arms—topless ladies and all—in his 1594 treatise, a Torah gloss titled Minha B’lulah. Without someone to do the honors, he had taken initiative.
