The Pennsylvania Supreme Court’s Chief Justice, Max Baer, has died unexpectedly. Baer died at the age of 74 in his sleep, according to a release sent by state Sen. Jay Costa.

Chief Justice Baer will be honored and remembered on Tuesday, Oct 4, at 10 a.m. during a public memorial service at Duquesne University.

Baer was first elected to the Supreme Court in 2003 and was sworn in as its chief justice in 2021. He was set to retire at the end of this year, after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 75.
