Caltech has retired a telescope atop the summit of Hawaii's Mauna Kea following a cultural sea change in how people view land development on revered landmarks.
Hoku Kea was built in 1968 by the U.S. Air Force and was transferred to UH in 1970 and to UH Hilo in 2003. But it has not actually functioned as an observatory for more than a decade.
