March 19 -- John Phillips, the founder and main songwriter for classic California pop group the Mamas and the Papas, died of heart failure on Sunday morning, his spokeswoman said. He was 65.

The Mamas & the Papas are best known for their tracks "California Dreamin' " and "Creeque Alley." In 1968, Michelle and John welcomed daughter Chynna Phillips, who is part of the trio Wilson Phillips.
