And in 2021, then-President Biden signed legislation into law to make Juneteenth, or June 19, a federal holiday. Biden’s signature made Juneteenth the country’s 12th federal holiday — and the first new one created since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was established in 1983.

President Trump made no statement about the federal holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, other than saying there were too many like it. Lesser occasions routinely garner official proclamations.

States that do not recognize Juneteenth as a permanent state holiday include Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Hawaii, Indiana, Mississippi, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Wisconsin and Wyoming, as of June 17. This means Juneteenth is not a paid day off in these states.
