I wouldn't recommend Mint at all (see, e.g. this recent discussion ), but even if you went with it, you probably should go for the variant they give the most love to, which is probably Cinnamon.

It can still do so for MATE, although many people had difficulties setting this up on Linux Mint. That’s why Linux Mint 17.1 includes easy Compiz setup.
