Lifeknot.com, a social networking site based in Cambridge, Mass., doesn’t skirt the issue of dating – it embraces it. Site managers say shared interests can and often do lead to romance.

“People have become pretty savvy with online dating and meeting people online, but still things shouldn’t be taken for granted,” says Matt Muro, founder of lifeknot.com.

“I have used lifeknot to meet people for activities,� shares Laura Neal of Brighton, Mass. “I met two other people to hike Mount Washington, a few weeks ago. I also used it to meet a new friend.
