I drove just 15 miles west to the prosperous town of Pineville. Located within the municipal limits are the 21 acres that comprise the President James F. Polk State Historic Site.

James K. Polk’s term ended on March 4, 1849. Zachary Taylor wasn’t sworn in until the next day. Some believed there was no president—or that an obscure senator was in charge.
