“AOL routinely evaluates its products and services and has decided to discontinue Dial-up Internet,” AOL wrote in a brief update on its support site — noting that dial-up and associated software “optimized for older operating systems” will soon be unavailable on AOL plans.

The landline-based service once played a dominant role in culture, exposing tens of millions to the internet and inspiring a movie starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

Beep, bop, boop, boooopp, scrsssshh… Such was the sound of AOL's dial-up service, a marker of trying to connect to the internet in the 1990s. Now the company has announced it's getting rid of dial-up.
