FIRST ALERT: Hurricane Ian, two years later - MSNFIRST LANDFALL. Ian became a hurricane over the northwestern Caribbean Sea at 5:00 a.m. EDT on September 26 while passing southwest of the Cayman Islands.
It was located about 150 miles (240 kilometers) west of Grand Cayman. It had maximum sustained winds of 35 mph (55 kph) and was moving northwest at 9 mph (15 kph).
