The southern hognose snake is generally harmless. When threatened, the snake puffs up to appear larger. Sometimes it hisses. As a last resort, its 24-inch-long body goes still.

The snake is the eastern hognose snake, and its range includes basically all of Mississippi. They aren't abundant, but can have locally higher populations if the habitat is right.
