H-E-B didn’t open its first Houston store until 2001. By 2015, it was the largest grocery chain in the entire city, surpassing Kroger and Walmart.

H-E-B plans to open a new store on Culebra Road in San Antonio this fall, featuring a fuel station, carwash, and True Texas BBQ. The $29 million store began construction last fall.
