GREENSBURG, Kan. — Like most residents who got word of the approaching tornado Friday night, Dennis McKinney quickly herded his 14-year-old daughter, Lindy, down to their basement.

Then the storm became a tornado factory. The first tornado touched down southwest of Greensburg at 9:21 p.m. and lasted 17 minutes. Then another one formed at 9:44 p.m. and narrowly missed the town.

A tornado watch was in place for eastern Kansas and western Missouri until 8 p.m. local time, and forecasters warned of the risk for large hail and damaging wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour.
