Hawking's family invited about 500 people to the ceremony, which took place at Cambridge University's Great St. Mary's Church, according to NPR.

Crowds of them came to the University Church of St. Mary the Great in the English town of Cambridge on Saturday for the service honoring Hawking, who died on March 14 at age 76.

The service was held at Great St. Mary’s Church, just steps away from Cambridge University’s Gonville & Caius College, where Hawking spent more than half a century as a research fellow.
