Hundreds of people gathered outside Great St. Mary's Church in Cambridge, U.K. for the event, which was attended by about 500 of the scientist's family, friends, students, and collaborators.

The service was held at Great St. Mary’s Church, just steps away from Cambridge University’s Gonville & Caius College, where Hawking spent more than half a century as a research fellow.
