Francis, the former archbishop of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and the first Latin American pontiff, died Monday in the Vatican at age 88 — one day after Easter. He served as pope for 12 years.

Francis’ pastoral outreach helped L.G.B.T.Q. Catholics feel more at home in their church. But it also meant that a far larger group — their families and friends — also felt more at home.
