Thousands of people were told to flee their homes in Malibu, Calif., as the Franklin fire approached. But a few stayed behind, using garden hoses to protect their property and themselves.

Fire hoses are considered ideal for this purpose due to their strength and durability. Founded in 1963, Southwick’s Zoo is home to more than 900 animals representing more than 150 species.
