In “Inside Out 2,” Riley (Kensington Tallman) is now 13, and as puberty hits, she gets a whole new slew of uncomfortable emotions — Ennui, Embarrassment, Envy, Nostalgia and, of course, Anxiety.

The scene from Inside Out 2 is consistent with this second idea that emotions emerge as part of development. The new emotions suddenly show up. They do not gradually emerge from the other emotions.
