25,000-year-old elephant ancestor found in Chandrapur - MSN
The Pleistocene epoch lasted from about 200,000 to 11,700 years ago, during which large mammals roamed India. The elephant found in Chandrapur district was approximately 15 feet in height.
Palaeoloxodon turkmenicus greatly exceeded the size of modern African elephants. Adults grew to around four meters tall at the shoulder and weighed about 10 tonnes.
Originally one of the statues that was on display in 2024 was planned to remain in Newport. Now a second has been added.
It parallels humans’ in many ways. Elephant ancestors originated in Africa, just like ours. Their descendants, among them mammoths, went out of Africa to inhabit other continents.
