Safety pins are everywhere—sewing kits, first-aid boxes, diaper bags—and chances are, you have a few lurking in a junk drawer or buried at the bottom of your purse right now.

The safety pin, patented by American inventor William Hunt in April 1849, served as a fastener which enabled a parent to more securely wrap a baby with cotton layers.
