Lance graduated from Davenport West High School and Iowa Wesleyan College, Mount Pleasant, Iowa. He is employed by the Davenport Community School District.

His sister, Judy, a junior at Davenport West High School, recently had an operation to remove her thyroid gland and several nearby lymph nodes.
