The Colossus was shut down on Aug. 17 to be replaced by a newer version of the ride. The Twisted Colossus was scheduled to open in spring 2015.

Twisted Colossus will combine the iconic wooden structure with 5,000 feet of state-of-the-art track. The four-minute ride will be the focal point of a newly themed area called Back Alley.

The 1,000-square-foot fire was located on the Colossus ride, LA County Fire Inspector Scott Miller told KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO. "There's nobody inside [the ride] from our knowledge," Miller said.

Colossus was the world's tallest and fastest roller coaster when it opened in 1978, at 125 feet tall and 62 mph. It closed last month and will be converted into a modernized wood and steel coaster.
