The 2018 Regional Elementary and Secondary Teachers of the Year were honored Thursday in the Coastal Bend.
In Onslow County, teachers at Coastal Elementary were gearing up for a year back with their students. They also got to teach and learn in a brand new building.
Teachers did not have a raise in the 2010-11 school year. In 2011-12, they received a 3.6 percent increase, including 1.6 percent to compensate for working three extra days.
San Luis Coastal, with 7,200 students enrolled in preschool through 12th grade, has a $74 million general fund budget for 2011-12 and is the second-largest school system in San Luis Obispo County.
The fifth-grade teacher at Richard A. Shields Elementary School in the Cape district added that if teachers are frustrated with the system they are in, then they need to find a new district.
“ (Coastal Ridge) earned that because of its student proficiency and growth over the past three years as measured by the State assessment (2012, 2013 and 2014 NECAP),” said Warren.
