Leatherwood is the island’s most important nectar plant, responsible for 70 per cent of the state’s honey. However, there is rising anxiety among apiarists.
Normally 1000 tonnes of leatherwood honey is harvested in Tasmania during the six-week season, but this year only 700 tonnes was collected. The overall honey harvest each is year is about 1200 tonnes.
