Leatherwood is the ­island’s most important nectar plant, ­responsible for 70 per cent of the state’s honey. However, there is rising anxiety among apiarists.

Normally 1000 tonnes of leatherwood honey is harvested in Tasmania during the six-week season, but this year only 700 tonnes was collected. The overall honey harvest each is year is about 1200 tonnes.
