Museums worldwide are returning the Benin Bronzes to Nigeria. Here's why it matters, who's receiving them, and what it means for restitution policies.
The Netherlands in June 2025 officially handed back to Nigeria 119 Benin Bronzes sculptures with a ceremony held at the National Museum in Lagos, showcasing four of them in the museum's courtyard.
The Benin Bronzes, made between the 15th and 19th centuries, include ornaments, jewellery and masks, many of which decorated the royal palace of the old Benin Kingdom, now part of Nigeria.
