Two interacting galaxies, dubbed the Penguin and the Egg, are seen in more clarity and detail than ever, after NASA released a new image (right) from the James Webb Space Telescope.
The Penguin galaxy, otherwise known as NGC 2936, is a spiral galaxy resembling the stout arctic bird, complete with a beak, a face with a bright eyeball, and a sloping, feathery-looking tail.
Astronomers estimate that the Penguin and the Egg galaxies first interacted 25 million to 75 million years ago. Since then, their celestial dance has continued as they loop around each other.
The Egg is a compact elliptical galaxy, and like a long-lost episode of The Love Boat, it’s “filled with aging stars,” as NASA notes.. The Penguin, on the other hand, is a spiral galaxy full ...
The Penguin’s shape has been distorted and twisted by the Egg over tens of millions of years, in what NASA calls “a slow cosmic dance” that has helped generate new stars along the way.
The two galaxies are designated NGC 2936 and NGC 2937 — but more famously, they’re known as the Penguin and the Egg. THANKS TO OUR SPONSOR: Become a Sponsor.
