With the aid of citizen scientists, astronomers have discovered an erupting cataclysmic variable star in a rarely seen evolutionary stage.

Only a few dozen of these short-lived binaries exist in the galaxy at a time, making the serendipitous find extremely valuable.

Unlike a supernova, which obliterates a star, a nova is just an explosion on the surface of a white dwarf that has gravitationally accreted too much matter from a companion star.
