Since October 28, amoxicillin oral powder for suspension has been on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA’s) list of drug shortages.

The oral suspension is most often prescribed in pediatric medicine. Representatives from Allegheny Health Network, UPMC and Excela Health all confirmed they are keeping an eye on the shortage.

The FDA recently added amoxicillin oral powder to the drug shortages list, citing increased demand. Pharmacists use the powder to make the liquid form of the medication that's easier for kids to take.

The type of amoxicillin currently in shortage is the "oral powder for suspension," a powder that's mixed into liquid before use, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported Oct. 28.

Amoxicillin is cheap and not very profitable, and this may have driven other companies out of the market. Most of the companies still producing liquid amoxicillin have it on allocation.
