Before “ The Other Black Girl ” had even hit bookshelves in 2021, Hulu had already snapped up the rights to bring Zakiya Dalila Harris ’s fictional thriller to the small screen.

The Other Black Girl doesn’t quite succeed at threading its disparate styles into one cohesive series. But the end of the season suggests that a second chapter could land with a little more finesse.

Not so for the little figure I was concentrating on. Only black paint where you'd expect to see flesh -- white flesh, that is, as seen in your standard white painter's picture of Paris.
