Demi Moore losing Best Actress to Mikey Madison at the Oscars 2025 was a surprise, and The Substance made the upset so much more ironic.

Shades of silver and gold dominated the red carpet at the 2025 Academy Awards on Sunday in Los Angeles. Stars including Emma Stone, Demi Moore and Halle Berry opted for metallic gowns, bringing sequined and mirrored embellishments to the forefront.

The 97th Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, takes place on Sunday at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Conan O’Brien is hosting the ceremony, honoring the best in cinema from the past year. Notable presenters include Halle Berry, Penélope Cruz, Scarlett Johansson, Oprah Winfrey, Cillian Murphy, Emma Stone and more.

Mikey Madison was not the only one surprised to have won Best Actress. The actress was nominated alongside four other actresses, Cynthia Erivo, Karla Sofía Gascón, Demi Moore and Fernanda Torres for the category.

Selena Gomez, too, kept the sparkle shining throughout the night. She arrived to the Oscars in a Ralph Lauren gown made from hand-sewn Rosemont crystals and more than 16,000 drops of glass. Following the ceremony, Gomez changed into a sequin-covered, deep blue Armani Privé look—one cut just as close to her body.
