Garth Hudson, the last surviving member of The Band, passed away peacefully in his sleep Tuesday morning at a nursing home in Woodstock, New York.

Because not only did the world lose a talented performer in the 87-year-old, it lost the last living found member of a legendary group — The Band. Hudson was preceded in death by founding member Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, Robbie Robertson and Levon Helm.

Garth Hudson, the keyboardist and last surviving member of The Band, has died. He was 87. Hudson “passed away peacefully in his sleep” on Tuesday morning at a nursing home in Woodstock, New York, his estate executor confirmed to the Toronto Star.

Robbie Robertson, the Band’s guitarist and songwriter in the group’s years of stardom (who himself passed away in August of 2023 ), offered a far more effusive assessment of what Hudson brought to the table in his 2016 memoir “Testimony”

The group's official Instagram page dubbed Hudson "a musical genius and cornerstone of the group’s timeless sound."

Garth Hudson, the multi-instrumentalist who served as the principal architect of the Band's sound, has died at 87.

An architect of the Band’s genre-melding sound, he played piano on “The Weight” and organ on “Chest Fever.” He was the group’s last surviving member.
