Resident Evil is turning live-action once again with a new reboot, so now comes the question of whether it can escape its campy but mediocre past.

A new Resident Evil movie is being developed by Barbarian director Zach Cregger, and it's said a bidding war has erupted from it.

Resident Evil fans receive exciting news, as the director of Barbarian is set to lead a new adaptation of the beloved video game franchise.

Multiple studios are reportedly in a bidding war for a film reboot of the Resident Evil movies, THR reports, and it has less to do with the rise of successful video game-based film projects than the guy who’s trying to bring the series back to theaters: Barbarian director Zach Cregger.

Constantin Film, which holds the screen rights to the series, will apparently produce alongside PS Productions. This would potentially mark the first time the Sony subsidiary has helped adapted a series it doesn’t wholly own, as while Resident Evil has a long history with PlayStation, Capcom created the franchise and makes the game.

Constantin Film, which has held the screen rights for Resident Evil since the 1990s, will reportedly produce the reboot along with PlayStation Productions, a studio formed in 2019 by Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt its original game properties for film and television in partnership with Sony Pictures.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Zach Cregger will write and direct a new Resident Evil reboot that sources say is "more faithful" to the games. Warner Bros, Netflix and others are currently bidding for it.

Four studios are battling it out to once again reboot Capcom's Resident Evil movie franchise, only this time, PlayStation Productions is also on board. According to Hollywood Reporter, Warners Bros. and Netflix are amongst a number of hopefuls looking to reboot Constantin Film's horror series alongside PlayStation's production company.
