Sinclair Broadcast Group, the largest owner of ABC stations, also owns affiliates for Fox, NBC, and CBS. On September 17, the company announced on X that it would suspend Kimmel's show and air a special in remembrance of Charlie Kirk in the show’s usual timeslot.

Sinclair Broadcasting Group, which owns over 30 ABC affiliate stations, previously demanded that Kimmel make a "personal donation" to the family of Charlie Kirk.

The decision came shortly after 400+ artists signed an open letter, published by the American Civil Liberties Union, condemning the suspension of the show. Kimmel also received public support from his fellow late-night hosts, including Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, John Oliver, and Seth Meyers.
