Alex Chiu, 41, was ascending Mount McKinley's West Buttress climbing route with two others on Monday when he fell at a spot known as Squirrel Point, according to park officials.

Alex Chiu, 41 of Seattle, died as a result of a 3,000-foot fall from the Mt. McKinley West Buttress climbing route on to the Peters Glacier. After recovery, rangers returned to Denali National Park and Preserve headquarters where his body was transferred to the state medical examiner.

Climbers were on an icy Alaska mountain when they saw a man in their group fall 3,000 feet to his death in Denali National Park, officials said. Alex Chiu, 41, of Seattle died June 2 after falling from Mount McKinley’s West Buttress climbing route, the National Park Service said in a June 4 news release.
