The Education Department cited Gov. Gavin Newsom’s own words questioning transgender girls in female sports, and said the state had violated federal civil rights law.

More than 20 U.S. states allow trans student athletes on teams that align with their gender, according to the Movement Advancement Project. California’s protections were signed into law under Newsom’s predecessor, Gov. Jerry Brown (D), in 2014.

The Trump administration says California must change its policies allowing transgender girls to compete on sports teams consistent with their gender identity.
