At least six inches of rain fell in a three-hour period on Thursday, leading to more than a dozen vehicles being washed into a creek. A candlelight vigil was scheduled for Wednesday evening for the victims by the nonprofit San Antonio Aware and Prepared.

“With shattered hearts, we share the devastating loss of our Cristine who tragically lost her life during the recent catastrophic storms and flash flooding in San Antonio, Texas,” loved ones of 29-year-old Army firefighter Cristine Gonzalez wrote on a GoFundMe page. “The powerful floodwaters swept away her vehicle, taking her from us far too soon.”

Residents in San Antonio were recovering after a month's worth of rain swamped parts of the city, trapping drivers, triggering treacherous water rescues, and leaving more than a dozen people dead.
