Dallas Mavericks CEO Rick Welts revealed his initial reaction to learning that the team traded Luka Doncic in February.

2025 has been a chaotic year for the Dallas Mavericks so far. General manager Nico Harrison traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in February, Kyrie Irving tore his left ACL in March, the team missed the playoffs after making the NBA Finals last year and Jason Kidd's club won the draft lottery.

The Mavericks are looking to add to a core that the front office believes is capable of pursuing a championship.

Bill Simmons believes the Mavericks will make at least one highly sought-after player available for trade this coming offseason.

Welts also dove into other well-trod ground of his experience around the trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. The CEO said he first learned of the deal from team governor Patrick Dumont 45 minutes before the deal was finalized. That it happened 32 days into the job for Welts, it had to be jarring.
