Al Hilal CEO Esteve Calzada says it would have been “completely counter intuitive” for his club to sign Cristiano Ronaldo on loan from Riyadh rivals Al Nassr for the Club World Cup.

Ronaldo’s previous deal with the Saudi Pro League (SPL) club was set to expire on June 30 but The Athletic reported in May that negotiations had taken place over a new contract for the 40-year-old.
