Arab leaders on Tuesday endorsed Egypt’s postwar plan for the Gaza Strip that would allow its roughly 2 million Palestinians to remain, in a counterproposal to US President Donald Trump’s plan to depopulate the territory and redevelop it as a beach destination.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Friday he will join an emergency meeting of the Arab League in Cairo next week to discuss the reconstruction of Gaza, as Arab states weigh a post-war plan for the Palestinian enclave to counter U.

Trying to counter President Trump’s call to “clean out” Gaza, Arab leaders have begun to outline their own vision for Palestinians in the territory.

Arab League states approved an Egyptian proposal for a phased reconstruction plan that would keep Palestinians in Gaza while excluding Hamas from governing.

The foreign ministers of France, Germany, Italy and Britain welcomed the plan, which calls for Gaza to be rebuilt over five years.

France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom have announced their support for Egypt's proposed rebuild, which is in direct competition with Trump's plan.
