A powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit near Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, prompting Japan's meteorological agency to issue a tsunami alert and the National Weather Service to issue a tsunami warning for the state of Hawaii and parts of Alaska on Wednesday.
"A beautiful day recreating on Delong Lake turned tragic when a person realized a friend out paddleboarding vanished," the Anchorage Fire Department (AFD) said in a news release . The caller reported that the man, who has not yet been publicly identified, hadn't been seen for about 15 minutes and wasn't wearing a life jacket.
As a precaution, some flights already en route to Hawai‘i are being redirected back to the mainland or diverted to alternate locations.
