MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WRBL) — The second annual Alabama Black Belt Adventures Association (ALBBAA) photo competition launched on Monday and will run through the summer months.

Madison County has a 7-member commission elected from six districts with an at-large election for the chairman. There is only one Black member of the body at this time.

Two majority Black cities in Alabama now have Black representation in Congress because of court-ordered redistricting. The progress comes as President Trump pulls back federal diversity initiatives.

A federal court says Alabama can't use a congressional map it found unconstitutional. The ruling comes in a voting rights case that resulted in the state getting a second Black member of Congress.

Shomari Figures, speaking here at the Democratic National Convention on August 22, 2024, would win Alabama's 2nd Congressional District to become the state's second Black elected U.S. House member.
