A slow-developing, broad area of low pressure located over the far northern portion of the Gulf is threatening to bring heavy rain and flooding.

The hatched areas on the National Hurricane Center's tropical outlook map indicate "areas where a tropical cyclone — which could be a tropical depression, tropical storm or hurricane — could develop," said National Hurricane Center Deputy Director Jamie Rhome.

A disturbance near Florida could evolve into a tropical depression or Tropical Storm Dexter this week, according to forecasters.

Tropical cyclones typically drop large amounts of rain along and near the storm's path. The slower and more significant the storm’s size, the higher the likelihood of higher rainfall totals. Some storms can drop well over 30 inches of rainfall, like when Hurricane Harvey dropped over 60 inches near Nederland, Texas, in 2017.

This storm is no longer being tracked. Nari was a tropical storm in the North Pacific Ocean Tuesday morning Japan time, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center said in its latest advisory. Typhoon season is year-round; however, most typhoons form from early July through mid-December.

Chantal made landfall near Litchfield Beach, South Carolina, at approximately 4 a.m. July 6 and is moving inland over northeastern South Carolina.

Florida saw more than 25,000 lightning strikes in a 24-hour period over the weekend. First Warning Weather Meteorologist Cam Tran said it was a very active night as strong and severe thunderstorms moved through the region.
