The acting Federal Emergency Management Agency chief baffled staff members at a Monday briefing when he said he wasn't aware that the U.S. had a hurricane season - something the agency has been responsible for keeping track of for nearly 50 years.

In a meeting with FEMA staff, David Richardson said he was unaware the United States had a hurricane season. Two staff members said it was unclear if he was serious, but the agency said he was joking.

Sweeping cuts made by the Trump administration have already left the government unprepared for hurricane season.
