A close call between a Delta Air Lines Airbus A319 taking off from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and a US Air Force T-38 jet, often used by the military for training, sounded alarms in the cockpit of the passenger plane Friday.

A U.S. passenger flight preparing to leave the nation's capital and an incoming military jet received instructions to divert and prevent a possible collision, officials said.

Delta Flight 2983 was leaving Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport around 3:15 p.m. when a collision warning sounded in the cockpit as an Air Force T-38 jet flew past at more than 350 mph at 800 feet, CNN reports. Delta confirmed there were 131 passengers, three flight attendants and two pilots on the plane.
