Never before in US history have coins been less valuable. In 1857, officials did away with the half-cent coin, which was worth the equivalent of about $0.14 in today's money.

There are types of coins and bills that circulate and can sell for thousands of dollars to collectors. This is the case with certain 25-cent coins, which could be worth up to $10,000.

"The one and two cent coins went [because of inflation in the early 1990s] and the sun came up the next day, but there's no current consideration to scrap the five cent coin," he added.
